One Way. One Truth. One Life
(John 14:6)
Every day, thousands of people pass by our churches, homes, and lives—rushing headlong through the busyness of life while eternity draws closer with each heartbeat. The sobering reality is that most do not know the Way, the Truth, and the Life. As followers of Christ, if we know the truth, we must share the truth—because eternity is literally driving by.
Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” This simple, yet profound declaration shapes not just our belief, but the way we must live. To illustrate this call, I am reminded of the powerful story of William Whiting Borden. Borden, heir to the vast Borden fortune, was set for a life of comfort and prestige. After high school, his parents gifted him a trip around the world. Years earlier, Borden had trusted Christ through the ministry of D.L. Moody, but it was during his travels through Asia, the Middle East, and Europe that a deep burden for lost souls was born in his heart.
Upon returning to the United States, Borden pursued his Ivy League education and theological training at Princeton. But the comfortable life was not his aim. He boarded a ship for China to serve as a missionary, burdened particularly for the Muslim people. Stopping first in Egypt to study Arabic, Borden tragically contracted spinal meningitis and died at the young age of twenty-five.
Was his life a waste? Hardly. Found in his Bible were three simple, yet profound phrases: “No Reserve,” “No Retreat,” and “No Regret.” His surrender inspired a wave of missionaries who followed his example to the ends of the earth. Borden knew the Way, embraced the Truth, and lived the Life—and in doing so, left a legacy that eternity alone can fully measure.
John 14:6 offers three realities that cannot be ignored.
First, Jesus is The Way We Cannot Miss.
He does not merely show the way; He is the way. In Acts 4:12, Peter, arrested for preaching Christ, boldly proclaimed that salvation is found in no one else. The world offers many attractive paths—roads that seem to promise freedom, happiness, and success—but Proverbs 14:12 reminds us, “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” Jesus fulfills Isaiah’s promise of the “Highway of Holiness” (Isaiah 35:8), and unless we walk with Him, we are walking nowhere of eternal value. He does not hand us a map; He offers Himself as our guide, destination, and companion.
Second, Jesus is The Truth We Cannot Ignore.
In a world that distorts and redefines truth, Jesus stands as the unchanging, living embodiment of truth itself. Truth is not a concept, a philosophy, or a fleeting principle—it is a Person. It is Jesus. In a culture described perfectly by 2 Timothy 4:3, where people accumulate teachers to suit their own desires, the anchor for our souls is not opinion but Christ Himself. When Pilate cynically asked, “What is truth?” (John 18:38), he was staring Truth in the face. Silence is not an option for those who know the Truth. We are called to hold on tight and testify boldly.
Third, Jesus is The Life We Cannot Live Without.
He offers not only eternal life but abundant life now (John 10:10). Without Christ, we may exist, but we do not truly live. Colossians 3:3 captures it beautifully: “For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” A tree can look alive but be rotting inside—dangerously unstable. Without Christ, that is humanity. But in Him, we find life that is vibrant, eternal, and overflowing.
Like William Borden, the call is to live with no reserve, no retreat, and no regret. Life truly begins at the cross and then flows outward into a world that desperately needs it.
Today, as 16,000 cars rush past our church daily, most of their occupants unaware of the Way, the Truth, and the Life, we must ask ourselves: Are we living the John 14:6 life and sharing it? What if our voice is the only one they hear speaking the name of Jesus? As Jesus warned, “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36).
For the believer: Live it. Share it. Shout it.
For the seeker: Jesus is not offering a religion to follow; He is offering Himself.
No reserve. No retreat. No regret. Choose the Way. Embrace the Truth. Live the Life.
